Certain brain chemicals are responsible for our moods. Serotonin makes us feel happy, GABA makes us feel relaxed, endorphins let us feel comfort + pleasure, dopamine makes us feel energized + focused. If we're low in any of these we're left feeling anxious, moody, depressed, stressed out, caught in negative loops + reaching for anything to help us feel better. These mood chemicals are made of amino acids, which are building blocks of protein, found in our food. We could be inherently low and on top of that if we're stressed out, not eating enough protein, and/or using addictive foods + substances we're depleting them + our mood suffers.
