5 Ways Raspberry Leaf Tea Benefits Hormones

As a member of the rose family, raspberry leaf is native to Europe and Northern Asia.

In the United States, raspberries are mostly known as a delicious and nutritious fruit that we love to eat in the summer months, but raspberry leaf has been used for many years in Chinese medicine as an herbal remedy. Specifically, raspberry leaf tea can benefit hormones.

Hormones are chemical messengers in the body.

Hormone balance is crucial in making sure your body is functioning properly. Hormones are in charge of relaying messages between cells and organs, which play a key factor in bodily functions.

The main female sex hormones are estrogen and progesterone.

Estrogen is produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat cells. An imbalance of estrogen can lead to bloating, fatigue, hair loss, problems with blood sugar, and fertility issues.

Progesterone is the hormone in charge of regulating the inner lining of the uterus. It is important to keep progesterone levels in balance, especially if you are someone who is trying to conceive since progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy.

Symptoms of low progesterone can include period pain, PMS, headaches, mood changes including anxiety or depression, or irregularity in your menstrual cycle.

If you are someone struggling with hormone imbalances and symptoms like:

  • fatigue

  • acne

  • sleep issues

  • period pain

  • anxiety

  • gut issues

  • headaches

  • heavy periods

  • missing or irregular periods

  • hair loss

  • PMS

  • infertility

You may be wondering: “are there ways red raspberry leaf tea can benefit my hormones?”

The good news is YES - raspberry leaf tea has benefits for hormones in the body.

The important question we need to be asking is: what hormones are out of balance and why are they out of balance in the first place?

This is taking a root cause approach when it comes to understanding our health and hormones. When we answer this question, we are understanding what is driving the imbalance (which is showing up as symptoms in the body).

By addressing the root cause, not simply just the symptom (or the hormone imbalance for that matter), we can find long-term, sustained healing.

How can red raspberry leaf tea benefit hormones?

Here are 5 ways raspberry leaf tea benefits hormones:

    1. Reduce Cramps

Reducing cramps is one of the ways that raspberry leaf tea benefits hormones. Tannins, a group of compounds in the raspberry leaf tea benefits hormones by reducing menstrual cramps by controlling the uterine contractions by tightening the smooth muscle.

    2. Reduce Heavy Periods

Another way that raspberry leaf tea benefits hormones is by reducing heavy periods. Heavy periods can be caused by hormonal imbalances, specifically too much estrogen called estrogen dominance. Raspberry leaf tea benefits hormones from the compounds it contains like tannins and ellagic acid which are phytochemicals. Additionally, the iron content in the raspberry leaf also supplies a good source of the recommended daily intake. This is important because women with heavy flow end up losing a lot of blood during menstruation so the raspberry leaf tea can support stable iron levels.

    3. Improve Labor

Another reason raspberry leaf tea benefits hormones is because it improves labor. In a controlled study, they found that the experimental group who took raspberry leaf tea had less incidence of cesarean section, membrane ruptures, vacuum birth, and use of forceps during delivery. In addition, raspberry leaf tea was found to shorten labor duration.

    4. Reduce Nausea

Reducing nausea is another way that raspberry leaf tea benefits hormones. This is because raspberry leaf contains ellagic acid and flavonoids which are anti-inflammatory compounds. By reducing inflammation in the body, this can place a beneficial effect on nausea. Additionally, these anti-inflammatory properties can be helpful in other PMS related issues like cramping and heavy periods.

    5. Balance Mood

Raspberry leaf tea has many antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components that have been mentioned above, but raspberry leaf tea benefits hormones through mood control too. When we are in a negative mood pattern for long periods, this is cascaded from our mood chemicals (neurotransmitters) being imbalance. Because our body systems all work together, this will affect the levels of our estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone levels. Due to this relationship, a study found that the phytochemicals in raspberry leaf have protected effects against damage from reactive oxygen species which are shown to cause neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s.
